Amazing Grass Protein Superfood Review and Giveaway

Plant based proteins are no longer a thing of the past, as a matter of fact, they are becoming the hottest nutrition staple around, and for a good reason. Whether you are a runner in marathon training, a yogi who enjoys a morning smoothie with a boost, or a vegan/vegetarian looking to add a bit more protein to your diet, a plant based protein supplement might be just what you need. At one point almost a conundrum to some, plant based protein sources are gaining hype because they are made with high quality nutrients, are tasty, and of course, cruelty-free. More and more brands are coming up with high quality, healthy powders to add to your daily diet, and Amazing Grass just released a great product, Protein Superfood Powder.

There are a few reasons why I prefer, and would wholeheartedly recommend a plant based protein over an animal one. For one, most standard protein powders are made with Whey, and not much else. If there is much else, it’s colors and preservatives and a bunch of stuff you don’t really need. Whey is a pretty cheap ingredient, usually made during cheese making as a by-product, with casein being the second type of protein that comes from milk. Whey is considered more complete, hence it made it’s way into protein powder staples. For anyone suffering from lactose intolerance, any milk related allergies, or simply bloating caused by dairy, this isn’t the best choice.
There’s been a lot of hype recently around beef proteins, which to be perfectly honest just sounds a bit gross to me - I really can’t imagine drinking beef with my morning smoothie.

Although these proteins are quite processed by the time they make it to a powder, beef itself is not an easily digestible substance. Most of these proteins are also fortified with vitamins and minerals for added value. Popular beef protein brands are made with 62% to 85% of protein, little to no sugar, 8 - 21% carbs (this number varies greatly based on what they mix it with, and any other fortifications), and 0 to 15 minerals and vitamins.

Overall, protein powders have gained popularity thanks to body building and later cross-fit, but Standard American Diet (SAD) definitely doesn’t lack protein. As a matter of fact, it is almost comical that vegans/vegetarians get the “Where do you get your protein?” question on a daily basis, when protein deficiency isn’t as much of an issue in modern times. On the other hand, vitamin and mineral malnutrition is.

When hearing the word malnutrition, it would be common to think of a sickly skinny child in a third world country, however, overweight and obese adults in US suffer from it in epidemic numbers. Most adults get more than enough protein on a daily basis, and oftentimes overestimate their workouts thinking they need to supplement. Truth be told, if you work out for an hour a day (and most people only at about 60% of their maximum), but sit, lay down, drive, and eat for the other 23 hours, you’re in no need of supplementing your body in order to ‘recover’. Our bodies were meant to work, and work hard, all day, every day. If you eat right, most supplements aren’t necessary, specially those of macro nutrients.

Back to plant based proteins. Adding more vitamins and minerals in a form of organic, unprocessed (or little processed) fruits, vegetables and ‘superfoods’ is a very healthy option that most will benefit from. That is at least my own experience and conclusion. When gaining quality protein with it, it becomes a nutrition bomb.

I have been a fan of Amazing Grass for years now, enjoying their green superfoods powder (chocolate is my favorite, but my husband can’t stand it so we usually have two in the house at all times). Now this plant based superfoods brand came up with an Amazing grass Protein Superfood powder, and I was psyched to try it as soon as possible!

I already use Orgain Vanilla powder on a daily basis, and have tried Garden of Raw and Vega before, so I had some experience in the subject and I had something to compare the new protein to. Here is how it stands:

PROS:
  • Tasty! I got to try the Vanilla Flavor as a Sweat Pink ambassador, and bought a Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor to take to Costa Rica with me
  • Made with 20 grams of complete plant-based protein
  • 7 servings of alkalizing greens
  • 2 full servings of fruits and veggies
  • Full of healthy and high quality ingredients, such as quinoa, pea, hemp and chia for protein
  • Contains Green food blend of wheat grass, alfa alfa, spirulina, chlorella, and more!
  • Added superfoods like goji, acai, and more fruits and veggies
  • Less than 1g of sugar, naturally sweetened with stevia
  • 3g of fiber that aids digestion
  • Overall easily digestible, and easy to add to smoothies, pancakes, muffins, or simply mixed with almond milk
CONS:
  • There aren’t many in my opinion. The only thing I could add as a down side, is that the taste isn’t too strong, which is also a benefit to many. Compared to Orgain Vanilla Protein that I’ve been using, Amazing Grass Vanilla doesn’t foam up much or add too much of a sweet or special flavor to my smoothie. Now, the PB and Chocolate flavor is very dominant and sweet and definitely changes my smoothie for the better!

My package arrived in high style!!! Not only did I get a protein powder, I got an amazing glass water bottle/mason jar that I love to use in hot yoga. I also received a beautiful Maha yoga mat from Prana, one of the best eco friendly yoga brands out there, embroidered with Amazing grass logo. I’ve been using it as a beach towel here in Costa Rica, and love taking it with me everywhere as it’s light, and doubles as a yoga mat, so I didn’t even have to travel with one!

The Amazing grass Protein Superfood powder is delicious in smoothies, and I use it every day. It would be silly of me not to share a recipe! As I have tried two flavors, I’m going to share two delicious smoothie recipes, one for each - Vanilla and Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein powder.

Strawberry Vanilla Smoothie Recipe

INGREDIENTS:
  • ½ Banana
  • 1 cup strawberries (frozen)
  • ¼ cup raspberries (frozen)
  • ¼ cup pineapple (frozen)
  • 1 cup Vanilla almond milk (unsweetened)
  • 1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
  • Water if needed
INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender, adding water to achieve desired consistency. Optionally sprinkle with chia seeds, or add more fresh berries to top.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Nana Smoothie

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 Banana (frozen for extra creaminess)
  • 1 scoop Chocolate PB protein powder
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1-2 Tbsp hemp seeds (optional)
  • Water if needed
INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender, long enough so the hemp seeds break down a bit, if using them. You can always keep them in pieces if you like a bit of a chewy texture in your smoothies.
  • If using ice, you might not need water. This smoothie tastes just like a milkshake, so it’s better to keep it thick and creamy.

In conclusion, instead of considering a protein supplement to grow those macho (or femmo?) muscles, consider adding more nutrients into your everyday diet via quality produce, whole grains and plant based protein sources. If you feel like you struggle with getting enough fresh produce into your everyday life (on, an apple a day doesn’t count as enough), consider this Protein superfood.
